Most people start January with the intentions of organizing their life more effectively. That’s one big reason that national Get Organized Month happens during the first month of the year. But what can this celebration do for you as a family caregiver? Probably a lot more than you would have expected that it could do, especially if you really look at where you need more organization.

Set up a System for Organizing Your Time

There’s a lot that you have to manage and deal with as a family caregiver and that often means you need to know who needs to be where and when. If you don’t already have a reliable way to keep track of your time, you need to make that a priority now. Managing your time as effectively as possible is going to go a long way toward helping you to be organized elsewhere.

Work on Filing Paperwork for Your Senior

You probably have more than a little bit of paperwork collected that pertains to your senior’s needs. If everything is shoved in one file folder or pile, that’s a nightmare when you need that one piece of documentation. Take some time and think through how you want to file and organize that paperwork and start putting that system in place.

Get Clutter Under Better Control

Clutter in general is a dangerous thing for your senior and for you. For your senior, clutter can all too easily become a tripping hazard. For you, clutter is a visual distraction. It also can keep you disorganized and prevent you from finding what you need, when you need it. Start decluttering as much as you can, even if that’s just a few items a day. It really does add up.

Find a Way to Take Time for Yourself

Something else that you might not think about in terms of organization is taking time for yourself. Bring in a caregiver to give you respite time and then make sure you’re able to relax and unwind. This works because your brain can’t keep functioning well if it never has time to rest. Taking respite time regularly gives you the space you need to be able to jump back in again.

Take advantage of whatever tools and systems you can put in place to become more organized, personally and as a family caregiver. It will save you time and energy that truly does need to go elsewhere.
