It’s time to start spring cleaning your parents’ house. This spring cleaning checklist helps you tackle all of the important areas. When you’re cleaning, start from the top and work your way down. Here are the places to focus your attention.

Wash Baseboards, Window Sills, Doors, Walls, and Door Trim

Get a damp cloth and a bucket. Murphy’s Oil Soap is a good product to use when cleaning window sills, trim, and baseboards. Remove all of the dust that’s collected during the winter. Rinse out the cloth in a sink regularly and dip the cloth in the bucket before moving onto the next area.

When you’re done all of the trim, you can wipe down walls and doors. Doors tend to get dirty in areas where you place your hand to push them shut.

Wash Curtains, Clean Windows, and Wipe Blinds

Place any curtains you can machine wash into the washer. You may need to line dry them. If they require dry cleaning, purchase a dry cleaning kit or take them to a dry cleaner.

While they’re being washed, wipe any blinds to remove dust and grime. If you can remove them, you could soak them in a tube with bleach and water while you wash the windows.

Use white vinegar or a window cleaner to clean the inside and outside of your parents’ windows. This is easier to do if the windows tilt-in. If they don’t, you may need to hire someone to wash the outside of windows on the upper floors. Rinse off the blinds and hang the clean curtains to finish this part.

Wipe Down Light Fixtures

Go through the home and wipe dust and grime off light fixtures. In the kitchen, you may have some grease to clean off. Use a degreaser to make this easier. If there are ceiling fans, clean the blades of dust.

While you’re cleaning the light fixtures, check the bulbs and replace any that have burned out. If you notice any of the light fixtures look worn or have cracked covers, hire an electrician to install new light fixtures if you can’t do it yourself.

Clean Furnishings and Floors

Wipe dust from all of the furnishings in the house. Use an upholstery brush attachment to vacuum chairs and sofas. When that step is done, vacuum and/or shampoo carpets and mop hardwood, tile, or laminate floors.

Hire Caregivers

Keep your parents’ house clean by making sure they’re supported by weekly or daily caregiver visits. Caregivers help with all aspects of housekeeping. Your parents can have caregivers help with laundry, dusting, vacuuming, and washing dishes.

To arrange caregiver services, talk to a home care agency after you talk to your parents. Caregivers only help in the areas where your parents want help. They work with your parents to help them age at home without stress.
