Elder Care in North Houston, TX

With the summer months in full swing it is a great time to freshen up your elder care routine and find new activities to enjoy with your aging loved ones. The warmer weather welcomes you to get outside for some much-needed sunlight, as well as physical activity and mental stimulation. Choosing creative activities for your seniors keeps their minds active and boosts their spirits while giving you a chance to have fun together away from your usual elder care activities.

Blowing bubbles may have been a favorite activity of yours when you were younger, and is probably something your young children love doing, but you may not have thought about it as something to do with your parents. This nostalgic, whimsical activity, however, is a fantastic opportunity to do some science, stretch your critical thinking skills, and just enjoy the lighthearted fun of creating and popping bubbles.

Try these ways to make an afternoon out of blowing bubbles with your seniors and their elderly health care services provider:

• Create your own solution. You could go out and buy bottles of premade bubble solution, but it is more fun and more economical to make up the solution yourself. The National Wildlife Federation recommends making a plant and animal-friendly solution using 1/4 cup liquid dishwashing detergent, preferably Dawn, 3/4 cup cold water, and 5 drops of glycerin. Mix the ingredient together, leave in an open container for several hours, and then get to work creating bubbles.

• Create a colorful plume. Make your bubbles even more exciting by mixing up a few batches of bubble solution and adding a few drops of food coloring. The color will show up best when the sun shines on them.

• Find creative bubble blowers. Do not settle for just recycling your old bubble wands to create your bubbles. Get creative looking around the home to find different items you can use to make your bubbles. Potato mashers, fly swatters, embroidery hoops, and even cookie cutters make great bubble blowers. You can blow into the solution like you would with a traditional wand, or create a stream of bubbles by dipping the tool in the solution and then waving it through the air.

• Make it a competition. Engaging in friendly competition keeps the mind active, encourages strategic thinking, and boosts your mood. Research shows it can even be good for releasing tension and easing stress. Make your bubble blowing competitive by seeing who can blow the largest bubble, the longest-lasting bubble, or the most bubbles in one continuous stream. Get active with your competition by seeing how many bubbles each person can catch on his wand, how many he can pop in a set number of seconds, or if he can keep up with the bubbles blown by someone else and pop all of them before they hit the ground.

When preparing your bubble-blowing afternoon, be sure to choose your spot carefully. Bubble solution is extremely slick and can make surfaces such as polished concrete, stone, marble, wood, or tile slippery and hazardous. Choose a spot with a textured ground surface that will absorb any spilled solution such as dirt, grass, or textured cement.
