A Family Legacy
I always saw myself caring for my parents in their elder years. The shock came when it was not my aging parents who needed care, but my youngest sister. In 2008, this wonderful woman, still in the prime of her life, was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. It was one of my most challenging experiences to witness the quick decline of my vibrant, capable and loving sibling. Though she expressed her concern of burdening the family, I gladly accepted the role of her caregiver. While I handled professional and family responsibilities of my own, I ensured my sister’s personal, medical and financial affairs. This was, without a doubt, the most heart-wrenching, emotional and exhausting experiences of my life, but nonetheless one I would most definitely repeat. It comforts me to know that my sister spent the last few months of her life in a loving environment surrounded by family and friends. My sister’s giving nature inspired me to grow my role in caring for others.
