YOUR VA BENEFITS MAY COVER HOME CARE SERVICES

If you or your spouse need assistance with activities of daily living like dressing, bathing, eating or mobility, memory care, or other support for disability or illness, your VA benefits may cover the cost of home care services. Several VA benefits cover home care, and in many cases Veterans are eligible for more than one program.

FOUR WAYS YOU MAY QUALIFY FOR HOME CARE BENEFITS THROUGH THE VA

HOMEMAKER AND HOME HEALTH AIDE:

This benefit is for eligible Veterans who need personal care services and help with activities of daily living. Care is provided by organizations like SYNERGY HomeCare who are part of the Community Care Network, a network of VA-approved providers. *Homemaker and Home Health Aide benefits can only be used in combination with Aid and Attendance Pension benefits. Only available to Veterans, not to spouses. Learn more.

AID AND ATTENDANCE PENSION:

This is a benefit paid by the VA to eligible Veterans, their spouses or surviving spouses in addition to a veteran’s basic pension. This can be used to cover home care services, including assistance with daily activities like bathing, eating, dressing, memory care, and support for disability or illness. Learn more.

PROGRAM OF COMPREHENSIVE ASSISTANCE FOR FAMILY CAREGIVERS (PCAFC):

The VA now includes assistance for family caregivers of eligible Veterans. They must be a family member or live with the Veteran full-time to be considered. Each Veteran is allowed to have one primary caregiver, and is eligible to receive at least 30 days of respite care each year, a stipend for their caregiving services, and other benefits. Learn more.

VETERAN-DIRECTED CARE (VDC):

The VA’s Veteran-Directed Care program allows Veterans to manage their own care and hire caregivers to help them age in place. Eligibility is based on a Veteran’s health status or care needs. Learn more.

What are Veteran home care services?

We’re committed to providing Veterans and their families with exceptional in-home care. In short, it’s the same compassionate home care we offer to all clients, but with an added commitment to meeting the specific needs of Veterans and their families.

Will VA benefits cover the cost of in-home care for Veterans?

In many cases, yes – the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers programs that can pay for home care services for eligible veterans. For example, Veterans who qualify for a VA Home Health Aide/Homemaker program or the Aid & Attendance benefit can receive financial assistance for in-home care assistance with daily living activities. We help veterans navigate which programs they qualify for, making it easier to use the benefits they’ve earned to get the care they deserve.

How can I apply my VA benefits to get home care?

The process typically starts with contacting your VA care coordinator or local VA office to discuss your need for home care. They can determine eligibility and guide you through enrolling in the appropriate VA home care program. Once approved, you can choose a provider like SYNERGY HomeCare (since we’re part of the VA’s Community Care Network in many areas). We’ll work with you and the VA to handle the necessary paperwork and create a care schedule. If this feels overwhelming, don’t worry – we are here to assist at every step, helping you understand the requirements and ensuring your VA benefits are smoothly applied so you can start receiving help at home as soon as possible.

What are some ways I can qualify for home care benefits through the VA?

There are a few benefits available for those who qualify for home care benefits through the VA including: homemaker and home health aide benefits, aid and attendance pension, Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC) or Veteran-Directed Care (VDC).
